Alumni pride

Anthony Grisillo, an alumnus of Widener’s master of education program, was named Pennsylvania’s 2014 Teacher of the Year. He earned his master's degree in science and technology from Widener in 2002.

He said that his Widener education taught him the importance of “critical thinking” in teaching, “not just opening up your textbook. That idea of going through and asking higher-level questions and having students find the answers through their experiences.”

Grisillo (his students call him Mr. G) is a teacher in the Rose Tree Media School District. He is is an instructor for the Academically Gifted Program for kindergarten through fifth grade. Since 2000, he has served as the elementary science coordinator for curriculum and development.

Grisillo said Dr. Stephen R. Madigosky and Dr. Bruce W. Grant were among his most influential faculty mentors at Widener while he earned his master’s.

“I always was made to feel that the entire experience was important,” Grisillo said of his time at Widener. “I valued that. It was never just about passing tests or writing essays. You incorporate that into what you become as a teacher yourself. You instill that curiosity and that passion in students just by being passionate and curious yourself.”
