The permanent collection includes the work of 19th century American and European painters as well as 18th and 19th century Asian art from the Alfred O. Deshong collection. Deshong was a wealthy Chester industrialist who acquired his collection at a time when Japanese art and design began to influence the style of Western artists.
For example, the Deshong collection includes American Impressionists Edward Redfield, Robert Spencer, and George L. Noyes. The collection also includes photographs and memorabilia that once belonged to the Deshong family.
Selections from the permanent collection are displayed throughout the year. In addition, a series of exhibitions of contemporary art is shown September through May.

From West Chester
Take Rt. 352 (Edgmont Ave. as you get closer to Chester) to 14th & Edgmont Ave. Make a left turn onto 14th Street at the traffic light and continue on 14thStreet for three blocks. In the middle of the fourth block is a building called University Center. The Gallery is located just inside the front door of the University Center, the first building on your right (see parking information below).
From Main Line Area
Follow Rt. 320 south, proceed through Swarthmore and continue on until you reach 14th & Providence Ave.; make a left turn onto 14th Street at the traffic light and continue on 14th Street for two blocks. In the middle of the third block is a building called University Center. The Gallery is located just inside the front door of University Center, the first building on your right. You can also take Route 476 south to I-95 south to Exit 6, follow directions from Philadelphia.
From Northeast Pennsylvania
Take Northeast Extension to the end and follow signs for 476 south towards Chester. Take 476 south to I-95 south. Take I-95 south toward Chester, staying in the right-hand lane. Exit I-95 at Exit 6 for Routes 320 and 352. Turn right at dead end. Bear left onto 13th Street. (Parking is available in the lot on 13thSt.) The Gallery is located in the University Center, the large brick building to your right as you exit I-95.

Take I-95 north into Pennsylvania. Exit at (PA) Exit 6 for Routes 320 and 352 and Widener University. At first traffic light turn left over bridge. Bear right at the fork on the other side of the bridge. Go to the next traffic light and turn right at the entrance to the Main Campus. Go to the second stop sign (Walnut Street); cross Walnut St. and the gallery is located in the University Center, the first building on the right.
From Northern New Jersey
Take New Jersey Turnpike south to Exit 2. Proceed on Route 322 west across Commodore Barry Bridge. Coming off the bridge, follow signs for Interstate 95 north and Philadelphia to get on I-95 north. Follow directions from Delaware above.
Parking: Parking is available in the 13th Street lot just off of Interstate 95, in the lot at the corner of 14th and Walnut Streets (Kapelski Lot), and at the corner of 14th Street and Melrose Avenue (Spang Lot).
