Widener Archives Receives Donation of the Complete
Works of Levi P. Wyman, noted Author and PMC Educator (August 15, 2012)
Levi Parker Wyman wrote, during the 1920s and 1930s, three series of popular adventure and mystery stories for boys: The Golden Boys, the Lakewood Boys, and the Hunniwell Boys. He worked at Pennsylvania Military College (Widener's predecessor institution) between 1905 and 1950. During that time, he taught Chemistry, served as Dean of the Faculty and then became Vice President. A school named The Fortress, that resembles PMC, plays a role in a number of his books.
Wyman also wrote a highly fictional account of life at Pennsylvania Military College during the Civil War. Titled After Many Years, this PMC history recounts the story of cadets from southern and northern states forming fast friendships that would be severely tested by the conflict between the north and south. After Many Years is full of adventure and romance, and also reflects the extreme racism of the period.
Widener has honored Wyman's memory by naming a room in University Center after him. The Widener Archives has been fortunate to receive a donation of the complete collection of Levi Wyman books from Delaware book collector Charles Pratt.
|The Golden Boys on the River Drive, the third in the nine volume series of the Golden Boys. Written in 1923, it describes the adventures of Bob and Jack Golden, students at the Fortress, as they work as lumberjacks in the Maine woods.||The Battalion Captain, a 1936 book set at the military school the Fortress, which was modeled after Pennsylvania Military College.|
