Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT)
Gift of Expression
Widener takes pride in creating a welcoming environment for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community on its college campuses.
As part of its mission to develop leaders, Widener takes pride in celebrating diversity and promoting pluralism on its college campuses. Students, faculty, administrators, and staff who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) will find Widener to be a welcoming and supportive environment that they can call home.
LGBT Task Force
The LGBT Task Force promotes Widener’s commitment to diversity, particularly on issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. The task force meets regularly and works to address issues affecting the welfare of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender members of the university community. Membership consists of both academic and student affairs representatives, including faculty, administrators, staff, and students.
Programs and Services
Widener provides multiple LGBT programs and services. For example, the Safe Space Ally program is an initiative created by the Widener University LGBT Task Force that contributes to a campus climate where everyone is welcomed and valued. Currently there are more than 150 faculty, administrators, and staff trained as safe space allies and they support members of the LGBT community by being available to listen, affirm and share referral information.
Student Clubs and Organizations
Student-run clubs and organizations such as the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) and LGBT Grad Style on the Chester Campus, and OUTLaws on the campus of the Delaware Law School provide a place for support, friendship, and discussion in an open and non-confrontational setting. Many of our LGBT students also find a support system through Greek life and athletics.
