English

Are you interested in a career that emphasizes reading, writing, and critical-thinking skills? Do you agree with experts who believe the power to think creatively, critically, and independently make you an asset to any employer? Are you excited by the possibility of a career in journalism, law, publishing, public relations, technical writing, the arts, or teaching? If yes, the English major at Widener will help you meet your goals.

Why study English at Widener?

• The program offers a path of study that opens new intellectual horizons. You have the opportunity to study the literature of the past and present and explore a wide range of emotions, experiences, values, and beliefs – all the things that make us human. Through reading, writing, research – and lively discussions – English majors become more perceptive readers and stronger writers and thinkers.

• Widener sponsors the College English Association’s publication, giving students the chance to gain valuable experience working on a scholarly journal. Students can also participate in the English Club, present their work at regional and national conferences, and be invited to join Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. The English department also publishes two student-run literary journals: the Pioneer Review, a print journal of student writing, and The Blue Route, a national online journal of undergraduate writing.

• You can minor in professional writing, which prepares you for writing jobs in any field, or journalism, which builds the foundation for a career in newswriting. For a career related to healthcare and medicine, consider the certificate in healthcare writing. Students also can work with The Dome, Widener's student-run news magazine.

The English major at Widener has so much to offer. Visit our campus, meet our professors and students, and see for yourself.
