Modern Languages

“Bonjour” and “Hola” are greetings frequently spoken in the hallways of Widener University’s Department of Modern Languages, a program that offers majors in both French and Spanish.

These majors involve much more than learning words and sentences. As a French or Spanish major, you’ll become immersed in a complete cultural experience emphasizing linguistic, literary, and cultural studies.

Why study modern languages at Widener?
  • Widener’s faculty is diverse and experienced, featuring professors who have lived, studied, and taught abroad.
  • You’ll find numerous opportunities to explore language and culture outside of the classroom, including lunch conversations regularly held in University Center, and frequent field trips led by faculty to museums, concerts, lectures, restaurants, and films.
  • International programs abound. You can choose from a variety of faculty-led trips and study abroad programs to Argentina, France, and Mexico, as well as other countries. Through cooperative arrangements with international colleges and non-profit groups, you can participate in summer or year-long programs overseas.
Through the lessons learned in and out of the classroom, you gain language proficiency as well as research experience, presentation skills, and critical-thinking abilities—all of which translate into successful career paths because the 21st century work world values bilingual employees.

If you are interested in a career that emphasizes French and Spanish language and culture, teaching, or graduate study, please visit campus and meet with our faculty members and students.
