Biology

The Department of Biology offers both the BS and the BA in Biology, which together comprise the largest major in the science division, as well as the Biology minor, and course work required for students in many other disciplines.  Biology students participate in many forms of experiential learning.  Building skills in critical thinking and scientific process is a primary focus of our curricula.  Research in Biology by undergraduates is abundant and takes place both in and out of the classroom, year round.  Read more about  it in the article below from What's Up @Widener Volume 5, Issue 2Summer Research

The BS in Biology is a traditional Biology degree that prepares students for entry into medical school or graduate school in Biology.  The BA in Biology has been developed for those students who wish to combine their Biology training with an additional program of studies in another field.  The BA in Biology provides excellent preparation for admission to physical therapy school and for those that wish to pursue careers in scientific writing, law or genetic counseling.

Our graduates pursue M.S. and Ph.D. programs in science, go on to medical, dental and physical therapy school and have become employed as educators or as scientists in the private sector.   Follow the links to the left for a listing of graduate, medical and professional schools as well as careers chosen by recent Widener Biology graduates.

The Biology department consists of eleven faculty members that are focused on the academic and professional success of each student as well as engaged in diverse research projects. You can see what individual faculty are working on by visiting their homepages which are linked to the faculty page at left.  Biology students develop meaningful mentoring relationships with faculty both in and outside of the classroom, and they also engage directly in productive scholarship.

Summaries of recent publications, presentations, and grants awarded to both faculty and students working with faculty are available by clicking on the links below. Use the links to the left to find out more about the Biology major and minor curricula, the faculty, and our facilities, courses, and honor societies.
