In the Spotlight

September 2010

September is here, and the semester has started! Last month I focused on the arts in Arts and Sciences, and this month I want to focus on the sciences. The first Tuesday of the semester saw the first Arts & Sciences Summer Research Symposium. Students who were busy conducting research during the summer had the opportunity to present the results of their research at the symposium. The top three projects were selected by judges from Swarthmore College. The projects were:

The effect of adipokinetic hormone on lipid phenotype in Drosophila melanogaster Ashley Bennett (’12) Research Advisor: Dr. Hemlata Mistry

Detecting sex determination genes by degenerate PCR in insects Kelly Hy (’11), Kidest Asfaw (’10) Research Advisor: Dr. Alexis Nagengast

Impact of host plant species on larval success in Epimecis hortaria Kelsey Fisher (’13), Kelly Hy (’11), Ashley Jones (’11), Carlee Moir (’12) Research Advisors: Dr. Kate Goodrich, Dr. Janice Krumm

More information about the program can be found in the September 15th issue of What’s Up at Widener.

Many of these students participated in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Student Summer Housing Program. The program is an opportunity for students who are working with faculty on research projects to stay on-campus for the summer. Students accepted into the program do not have to pay summer housing charges, but are responsible for their own food expenses; a meal plan through the University cafeteria is will be available for those interested.
