Chemistry Major

Chemistry at Widener

The Chemistry Major at Widener provides students with a unique combination of theoretical and research perspectives that prepare students for careers in chemistry as well as medicine, secondary education, engineering, biochemistry, materials science, dentistry, pharmacology, toxicology, and patent law. To meet the diverse needs of these students, the chemistry department offers a number of different degree programs. These include:

• Chemistry major. This option is designed to meet the needs of students who want a strong foundation in chemistry, but who do not necessarily wish to pursue a traditional career in chemistry.
• Chemistry major with ACS certification. Students who want more extensive coursework in chemistry and mathematics may choose to earn a Bachelor of Science with American Chemical Society (ACS) certification. The ACS has approved the chemistry program at Widener since 1968.
• Chemistry major with pre-medical concentration. This is a traditional chemistry major with additional coursework in biology and biochemistry so that students are prepared for medical school.
• Science education with chemistry certification. This program prepares students for certification to teach high school chemistry.
• Chemistry/chemical engineering double major. A Double Major in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is offered in conjunction with the School of Engineering.
• Chemistry/chemical engineering double major with coop. Students may also participate in the School of Engineering cooperative engineering program where students get work experience as part of the curriculum.
The chemistry faculty are committed to engaging students in the learning process. We believe in active learning and help our students to grow both personally and professionally. Classes are small, so students develop a close working relationship with the faculty. Many of our students coauthor papers and professional publications with faculty members. All students are provided with research opportunities.
Widener students have the hands-on opportunity to learn analytical techniques including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry, and many types of chromatography. Students are able to develop skills in handling air-sensitive materials using glove boxes and vacuum lines. Biochemical techniques such as PCR amplification and ultracentrifugation are available at Widener.
Are you interested in industrial research, medical school, graduate school, environmental analysis, or law school? Have you considered a career as a chemistry teacher? Do you want hands on experience via state of the art laboratory facilities? If any of these options excite you, the Chemistry major at Widener is an ideal place to begin your career.
We invite you to come to campus and meet with our faculty members and students. Experience the excitement that is the Chemistry Major at Widener.
