Environmental Science Major

The Environmental Science Department at Widener University provides students with the knowledge and technical skills required to identify, analyze, and to work toward resolving some of the most important and pressing environmental problems currently facing our society. The program broadly trains students by placing emphasis on understanding the physical, chemical, and biological properties that govern the environment relative to human interaction. To this end, our courses cover a wide range of environmental subject areas including geology, meteorology, oceanography, geographic information systems, pollution biology, environmental analysis, ecology, and sustainability science.

In addition to classroom study, students are encouraged to immerse themselves in environmental issues and engage in scientific research with the Environmental Science faculty. This takes places in our modern classrooms, well-equipped laboratory facilities, state of the art computer facilities, and also in the field. Many classroom and field projects result in student presentations and authorship of professional papers. This experiential learning may be extended by allowing students to work with government and private agencies that play a role in environmental protection, planning, and stewardship.

Since economies and subsequent environmental problems are becoming globalized, students have the opportunity to travel overseas to study a variety of unusual habitats. Our affiliation with conservation organizations and conservatories in Costa Rica and Peru provide our students with unique opportunities to conduct original research in some of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth. These experiences offer students the opportunity to interface with people from other cultures on truly unique service projects. Here our student’s work alongside scientists, teachers, and people from rural walks of life in efforts that are directed toward solving grass-root environmental problems.

Our departmental philosophy supports the notion that students become active and contributing members of society while at Widener. While course study is essential, we believe that students need to engage in environmental pursuits in their local communities, regional settings, and in some instances international venues. We accomplish this by providing students with access to full-time faculty who are excited and willing to work with students on projects that will help shape and hone their professional skills.

Are you looking for a career that emphasizes an understanding of environmental relationships? Are you excited by a major whose interdisciplinary nature opens up an array of opportunities for graduate school and career possibilities? Would you be interested in teaching environmental science in the future? If any of these options look good to you, the Environmental Science major at Widener is an ideal place for you to lay the groundwork for a successful career.

We invite you to come to campus and meet with our faculty and talk with student’s currently enrolled in the Environmental Science Program. Experience the excitement that the Environmental Science Major offers students at Widener.
