Math Major

Would you like to make use of your outstanding mathematical skills? Does the possibility of pursuing graduate school in mathematics excite you? Do you want to teach secondary school mathematics (grades 7 – 12)? If yes, the mathematics major at Widener is an ideal place to launch a successful career.

Why study mathematics at Widener University?

• The program is demanding yet flexible. Individual attention is the hallmark of the program with small classes staffed by faculty rather than graduate students. Students can work directly with faculty to explore their individual interests within the field.

• Graduates are recruited by an array of employers who value both their computational skills and their logical approach to problem solving.

There are three different tracks available in the mathematics major providing the choices and flexibility to match the interests and goals of our students:

• The traditional track is designed for students interested in mathematics and is recommended for those considering graduate study. It includes a broad overview of the different areas of mathematics including algebra, analysis, geometry, topology and statistics. It also has sufficient freedom for a student to pursue a minor in a second area of interest, such as physics, computer science, finance, accounting or economics.

• The secondary mathematics education track is designed for students interested in becoming a mathematics teacher in grades 7 - 12. It includes the mathematics and education courses necessary for certification to teach mathematics at the secondary level.

• The mathematics and computer science track is designed for students interested in the closely related fields of mathematics and computer science. It includes the core material from both mathematics and computer science.

We invite you to come to campus and meet with our faculty and students. Please visit and experience firsthand the excitement that is the mathematics major at Widener.
