Engineering

Cutting edge technology, state-of-the-art laboratories and highly qualified faculty inspire students to achieve in a small class environment at Widener. The School of Engineering boasts a highly desirable 16:1 student to faculty ratio with programs that provide a practice-oriented and analytically-based undergraduate education in Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Graduate programs are also offered in Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Management, dual MEng/ MBA and certificates in Land Development and Technology Management.

As an undergraduate student, you can explore and discover concentrations in areas of bioengineering, energy, computers and networking, transportation and environmental engineering. Engineering graduates can expect to earn impressive salaries at the most prestigious firms in the region and the world. Their responsibilities cover a wide range of expertise including product and systems design, research and development, project management, process control, and beyond.

Another option that appeals to many graduating seniors is the BS/MEng (Bachelor of Science/Master of Engineering Program). It is an accelerated program that makes it possible for engineering students to complete their bachelor of science and Master of Engineering degrees in as little as five years. The program allows for two graduate engineering courses taken at Widener to replace two undergraduate technical electives and have six credits apply to both the undergraduate and graduate degree requirements. There are five specializations within our master of engineering program and a dual MEng/MBA degree. An Environmental Engineering option is also available.

Students just don’t study Engineering at Widener, they experience it! We believe education goes beyond the classroom walls. The School of Engineering offers an optional Cooperative Education Program that provides 12 months of practical experience. Undergraduate students can take advantage of the co-op experience and still graduate within four years. The highly paid co-op placements are with leading technology employers that include: Air Products, Boeing, Disney, Dupont, Exelon, Naval Surface Warfare Center, PennDOT and SIEMENS. In addition, undergraduates have the opportunity to gain hands-on laboratory experience through independent research projects with doctoral level faculty members. Graduate students can take advantage of the co-op program to gain professional experience and establish contacts in industry.

The undergraduate capstone course, Senior Project, is conducted over two semesters. The senior design course is focused on finding real world engineering problems for both the private and public sectors. Students are teamed in small groups and are assigned a faculty and industrial advisor. They perform engineering and managerial functions on a project, and report both orally and in writing on the progress and results of their work. In recent years, seniors have designed a pedestrian bridge, an upgrade of an existing wastewater treatment plant, a thermoelectric power generator, and a cooling device to minimize ischemic brain injury during surgery.

Competitive scholarships and free laptop computers are available to qualified incoming freshmen. Widener Undergraduate Engineering Programs are accredited by The Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012, telephone: (410) 347-7700. If you want practical experience, a technically advanced learning center and outstanding career opportunities, we are the program for you.
