Undergraduate Degrees

The Center for Education offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Special Education: The Early Years (Grades PK-4) and Elementary Education: The Middle Years(Grades 4-8). The curriculum of the Bachelor of Arts programs consists of foundation courses in the appropriate subject area, professional education courses, and varied field experiences culminating in a semester of student teaching. Students seeking secondary teacher certification (grades 7-12) choose a major in the College of Arts and Sciences and take education courses offered by the Center for Education. Graduation and certification requirements for the bachelor's programs in education include:

* having an established major
* having successfully completed the requisite education courses
* an overall minimum GPA of 3.0
* having successfully completed all field experiences and student teaching
* having successfully completed the writing sample requirement
* having successfully completed the Praxis series tests.

The names of all approved candidates will be forwarded to the Commonwealth's Department of Education with the request that the appropriate certification be granted. This certification permits graduates to teach in Pennsylvania schools.

Widener is also pleased to announce a new Advanced Standing option for juniors in selected Elementary Education programs. This program puts qualifying undergraduates on the fast track to earning a master's degree, requiring only one additional year of coursework!
