The Office of the Provost is responsible for the academic and student life of the university, focusing on students, faculty, curricula, and support for success.
In collaboration with the academic deans, Provost Jo Allen monitors the curricula and advocates for academic resources for all eight colleges and schools at Widener: the College of Arts and Sciences; the School of Business Administration; the School of Engineering; the School of Hospitality Management; the School of Human Service Professions; the School of Law; the School of Nursing; and University College.
Dr. Allen monitors curricular innovation and resulting student demand; actively encourages and supports faculty in their assessment activities that gauge programmatic excellence, determines the need for hiring new faculty; oversees the faculty’s recruitment, promotion, and tenure review process; and administers faculty development programs.
Working with the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Academic Studies and the Associate Provost for Graduate Programs, the Provost administers the academic policies, procedures, and institution-wide requirements for all students. Additional oversight for the Wolfgram Library, the Honors Program, Academic Support Services, Multimedia Classroom Support, and Cooperative Education round out the features and services that lead to educational excellence at Widener.
In her work overseeing the Office of Student Affairs, the Provost collaborates to create dynamic and innovative programming that promotes students’ readiness for learning and contributing to society. The Provost also chairs the Faculty Council, the Provost’s Council, and the Deans' Council.
