Dean Search Updates, College of Arts & Sciences

November 17, 2017: Dean Search Update #2

Dear Members of the Widener University Community:

We are pleased to update you on the status of the search for the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Our search committee received and reviewed a strong and diverse pool of candidates for this position.  We are excited to move to the next phase of the search, and will be hosting candidates for campus visits the week after Thanksgiving.  These visits will include meetings with faculty, students, staff, and administrators.

Finalists will be asked to participate in an open forum with A & S faculty and staff, and this will include opening comments regarding their visions for the College and the ways they would envision meeting the opportunities facing the College.  These meetings will take place as follows:

Tuesday, November 28 (Location:  Kirkbride 149)
Wednesday, November 29 (Location: Kirkbride 149)
Thursday, November 30 (Location:  Kapelski Learning Center #1)

All will be held from 2:45–3:45.

These open forums are available to any member of the Widener community who would like to attend.

Invitations for specific meetings to take place during these visits will be sent separately.

Thank you for your participation in the search as a community.

Sincerely,
Dale Scalise-Smith, Provost

September 19, 2017: Dean Search Update #1

Dear Members of the Widener University Community:

We are pleased to share with you a brief update on the search for a new dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.  Please look for continued updates as the search progresses over the course of the fall semester.

A website has been created which will serve as an archive for all updates and provide easy access to the list of search committee members and other useful information such as the full profile.

Over the summer, the search committee, led by co-chairs Dean Jayati Ghosh (School of Business Administration) and Professor Janine Utell (English, College of Arts & Sciences), drafted the profile, which was then reviewed and approved by the president and the provost. This document will guide the efforts of the search committee, from the early stages of attracting top candidates to the interview and campus visit processes later in the semester.

The deadline for applications is October 15. At that point, the committee will begin the work of selecting candidates.  Throughout the search process, it is of the utmost importance that the committee adhere to the highest standards of confidentiality in order to attract and retain the most highly qualified candidates. Because the dean of the College of Arts & Sciences must serve as the leader of and advocate for the faculty, we plan to bring finalists to campus in late November/early December to meet broadly with all interested faculty, staff, and students. Those meetings will include an open forum setting for all interested faculty. We will strive to manage these campus visits in a way that is invisible to those outside of the Widener University community, however, and will ask for your assistance in that effort.

Finally, the committee would like to ask for your nominations of potential candidates. If you would like to suggest a name, please contact Suzanne Driscoll-Beckett, Director of Talent Acquisition, at sdbeckett@widener.edu.

Thank you for your interest in and support for this important search. We look forward to identifying the next leader of the College of Arts & Sciences, and will be as diligent as possible in keeping the university community informed.

Regards,

Dale Scalise-Smith, Provost
