There’s a reason they call chemistry the “central science.”

Chemistry is fundamental to many scientific disciplines, and it’s what helps us understand other physical and life sciences like earth science and biology. It explains why soap works, why leaves change color during the seasons, and why food spoils.

Because chemistry is such a versatile science, students who major in chemistry can choose to pursue a broad mix of careers and professions from government and education to business and engineering.

Rigorous Academics

Widener’s undergraduate chemistry programs are demanding, and students must complete all required coursework with the grade of C or better. Undergraduates are also required to conduct an individual research project, which they complete in consultation with faculty members. Chemistry majors also regularly travel to regional and national conferences to present their work.

In terms of facilities, chemistry majors have access to the department’s advanced research labs on the fourth floor of Kirkbride Hall, where students learn analytical techniques like:

  • nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR);
  • mass spectrometry; and
  • many types of chromatography.

Students are also trained in handling air-sensitive materials using glove boxes and vacuum lines.

Flexible Programs

Widener University offers a number of options for students wishing to study chemistry:

  • Chemistry major: This program meets the needs of students who want a strong foundation in chemistry, but who do not necessarily wish to pursue a traditional career in chemistry. Offering more flexibility, the program  allows students to tailor the degree to their particular interdisciplinary interests.
  • Chemistry major with ACS certification: Students who want more extensive coursework in chemistry and mathematics may choose to earn a Bachelor of Science with American Chemical Society (ACS) certification.
  • Chemistry major with pre-medical concentration: This is a traditional chemistry major with additional coursework in biology and biochemistry so that students are prepared for medical school.
  • Chemistry/Chemical Engineering double major: Double Major in Chemistry and Chemical Enginering can be completed either with our without a semester of cooperative education.

Devoted Faculty

Class sizes in chemistry are small, meaning undergraduates get the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with their teachers.  Widener faculty members are committed to engaging students in the learning process, and they believe in active learning.
