Graduate Certificate in Urban Studies

Students who pursue an urban studies certificate with graduate courses in urban history and theory, the human and built environments, public policy, and sustainability will develop a deeper understanding of urban and suburban issues and will be well positioned to take the lead in addressing those challenges in creative and unique ways.

The certificate in urban studies introduces students to an array of perspectives and methodologies in the study of the urban milieu. Students in the program will obtain skills and knowledge that will enable them to contribute in meaningful ways to their local and regional communities. Additionally, students will have opportunities to apply those skills while studying through participation in the partnership programs between the College of Arts and Sciences, the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, and Chester city leaders and residents.

Students who complete the urban studies certificate will have developed a theoretical, historical, and comparative understanding of the urban environment, as well as the ability to employ an interdisciplinary approach in their analysis of contemporary issues concerning urban communities, space, and governance.
