My Widener Experience

why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree in public administration?

I felt the coursework was a perfect fit for my current position with the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Having to work with both state and local government officials, I was provided with a solid foundation to continue on in my career trajectory.

what made you choose widener?

I chose Widener University for two important reasons. The first reason was the reputation Widener has for producing leaders as well as its commitment to community. The second reason I chose Widener was due to the referrals I received from my coworkers. I work with several Widener graduates, and they could not say enough about their experience at Widener. It made me want to be a part of the family.

My Professional Experience

how have leadership skills learned at widener helped you to succeed?

In my current position, I find myself leading focus groups and projects rather than just participating. The leadership skills I learned at Widener have provided me with the confidence to take the lead on projects and guide others when new programs are introduced.

what advice would you give a prospective student considering your graduate program?

The MPA program allows students to choose a specific course of study. While my work is in state government, I took two classes that dealt with the nonprofit sector. Having that opportunity to look at a different aspect of public service gave me a greater understanding of how nonprofit organizations work with government entities, providing services that the government itself cannot afford to provide. Therefore, it is important to look beyond your career goals as you might be surprised what you see and what you learn.
