Interdisciplinary Programs, Arts & Sciences

We live in an increasingly complicated world that demands new ways of thinking and innovative ways of integrating knowledge. We often need to view the world through multiple lenses utilizing a variety of research methods and making connections between concepts developed in more than one disciplinary field.

Interdisciplinary programs draw on knowledge, methods, and skills from more than one traditional major as a way of integrating knowledge and building bridges between important concepts. Interdisciplinary studies encourage students to make conceptual connections so they can answer complex questions and solve multidimensional problems.

Interdisciplinary Programs Offered at Widener

  • African & African American Studies (minor): Explore the experiences of Africans and African Americans from a variety of methodological viewpoints.
  • Digital Media Informatics(major): Study how media companies and organizations use technology to better understand their audiences and create content that most appeals to those media consumers.
  • Gender & Women’s Studies (major): Develop a critical thinking framework that helps you reexamine how gender affects societies and cultures worldwide.

Students can also opt to major in more than one discipline or major in one and minor in another to develop some interdisciplinary perspectives.

Why Pursue an Interdisciplinary Program

Interdisciplinary programs are growing in popularity nationwide, and Widener offers several programs that encourage students to integrate knowledge content and methodologies from more than one discipline. These programs capture the ever-changing state of research where disciplines emerge, combine, and meld in new ways, preparing graduates to become critical thinkers and complex problem-solvers.

Interdisciplinary study allows students to learn how to think and communicate with experts in multiple fields. Students learn to integrate knowledge and skills from several disciplinary perspectives—which is a key to success in both their personal and professional lives.
