The Widener Advantage

Students and faculty share what to expect from the pre-health care professions program at Widener and what sets Widener apart from other schools. View video.

Widener’s College of Arts and Sciences offers a comprehensive pre-professional program providing supportive activities throughout the academic year for students pursuing careers in health care, such as medicine.

The pre-health professions advisor actively assists students starting in the first year to provide the opportunity for each student to attain an academic and extracurricular record worthy of admission to a health care profession program.

To prepare for admission to a professional school, students may major in any discipline offered by the university, although they must include courses in biology, chemistry, physics, English, and mathematics.

Why Widener?

spencer ng '15Excellent Preparation for Health Care Professional Schools

Students develop exemplary communication skills, practice working in a team, participate in civic engagement projects, and conduct research with faculty as early as their freshman year. Because of this excellent preparation, Widener pre-health care professions students are regularly accepted into medical, dental, physician assistant, and optometry programs.

Accelerated programs (3+4) enable students to earn both a BS in biology and a doctor of osteopathy, dental medicine, optometry, or podiatric medicine. Additionally we have a guaranteed interview affiliation with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) for students of any major who meet the qualifications.

Students interact closely with faculty through our small-sized classes, collaborative projects in the research laboratory, and extracurricular activities such as short-term study abroad trips or field trips to local museums. Our faculty members genuinely know students and can provide personal and informative letters of recommendation for applications to health care professional programs.

How to Apply

  • Students interested in the 3+4 accelerated programs (except physical therapy) should complete the online Widener application choosing a biology major and notify the health professions advisor of their interest as soon as they arrive on campus.
