Summer Research Programs

Students who wish to use the Widener facilities for self-driven research or to focus on a joint research project with faculty over the summer months may apply for free summer housing through the university’s Summer Research Program.

Biochemistry students at Widener start thinking like a scholar as soon as they arrive on campus. Research is an essential part of the university’s mission to mold science majors into leaders.

Opportunities exist for student-led research and assisting distinguished faculty in their own work. An example of undergraduate research includes the study of resveratrol, a compound found in red wine that has been shown to have anti-aging effects.

Nicole Gilette ’16

Nicole was awarded a Clinton Global Initiative grant to study the effects of the pesticide glyphosate, found in Roundup, on crayfish. Her senior thesis project with Dr. Itzick Vatnick involves analyzing the growth, metabolism, and levels of triglyceride, protein, and glucose on crayfish exposed to glyphosate. Nicole, a double major in biochemistry and biology, presented her results at the national American Society of Cell Biology Meeting in December 2014. This experience helped her be selected for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Exceptional Research Opportunities Program (HHMI EXROP) at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Spencer Ng ’15

Spencer, a biochemistry major, completed her senior thesis with Dr. Alexis Nagengast on identifying genes involved in the over- and under-storage of fats using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model for human obesity. She received a William R. Bailey Endowed Scholarship to support her research and travel to San Diego in March 2014 to present her work at the national Drosophila Research Conference and the national American Society of Cell Biology Meeting in December 2014.
