Students can pursue a dual degree that results in a bachelor of science in electrical engineering and physics or mechanical engineering and physics within four years. Interested students should contact the chairs of both departments to arrange their study program and schedule.

Access to State-of-the-Art Equipment

Widener’s physics department belongs to the National Undergraduate Research Observatory (NURO), which enables students to travel with faculty to the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, to participate in astronomical research projects using the facility’s 31-inch telescope. Widener physics majors may also explore the night sky and conduct research using the 16-inch Meade Cassegrain telescope at the on-campus Widener Observatory.

Student Research

At Widener, students benefit from close interaction with faculty. Working with faculty on real-world problems is an important supplement to classroom education. Students are strongly encouraged to engage in research early in their undergraduate tenure, culminating with the presentation of their senior thesis on Student Project Day. Research topics that students work on include optical gyroscopes, superluminal and sub-luminal light, atomic clocks, active galaxies, black holes, variable stars, lasers, and more.

Flexible Curriculum

Physics majors at Widener not only learn all of the core subjects of physics at the introductory and advanced levels, but also have the opportunity to follow different tracks. As an example, a physics student can choose to follow a research track that leads to a physics honors designation. A non-research track gives students the flexibility to take other courses outside of the main physics curriculum that could result in other minors or majors. Students can also minor in astronomy.

I work closely with the V-22 aircraft, as well as other aircraft designed and produced by the Boeing Company (including the CH-47). Boeing also works closely with Widener University — their support helped my senior team complete our AeroDesign project.

Widener Observatory

Since its completion in January 2005, the Widener Observatory has allowed for exploration of the night sky by community members, faculty, and students in physics and astronomy courses. Brilliant images of planets, stars, and galaxies have all been captured with the assistance of the Observatory’s 16-inch computerized Meade Cassegrain reflecting telescope.
