FAQs, Hospitality Management
What is hospitality?
Hospitality is the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers in a warm and welcoming environment. Some of those environments include:
- Timeshare/vacation ownership
- Full-service restaurants
- Casual dining restaurants
- Fine dining restaurants
- Limited service restaurants
- On-site food service in healthcare, sports and entertainment, parks and destinations, business and industry, and education
- Theme parks
- Meetings, conventions, and expositions
Why is there a required co-op?
Our industry partners believe co-op provides a realistic preview of the industry, and therefore, increases the likelihood of employment success upon graduation. Our students feel more confident and better prepared after the co-op experience. We believe that our cooperative education program helps to develop leaders for the global hospitality industry. See more about cooperative education.
Is co-op a paid position?
Yes! We insist that the student is paid for the co-op position. We believe it is mutually beneficial to the employer and the student to offer a compensation package that is reasonable for the position. The rate of pay, however, is negotiated between the employer and the student.
Do I pay tuition during my co-op semester?
Yes. The student is earning 15 credits toward the four-year degree during the co-op semester. There is a six-hour classroom requirement each week. Additionally, the student is provided a great deal of home study in the form of homework, readings, and projects. The student truly experiences the rigors of combining full-time employment with a full-time academic schedule.
Does Widener help me find a job?
Absolutely! We hold an annual School of Hospitality Management career fair where employers from Philadelphia and the metropolitan area gather to speak with students about field experiences, co-op positions, and opportunities available upon graduation. Additionally, the Widener University Career Services office centrally houses employment opportunities from employers who contact us.
