Community Partnerships, Nursing
Cityteam has been based in the city of Chester for more than 20 years. It offers shelter for the homeless; meals; emergency food boxes; a residential recovery program for men with addictions; and formula, diapers, and other baby items for at-risk mothers.
As a partner to the School of Nursing, it houses the School of Nursing’s Community Nursing Clinic. Free health care is provided to those with no insurance. This clinic is staffed by volunteers, including undergraduate and graduate nurse practitioner students and our registered nurse and nurse practitioner faculty and alumni.
Crozer-Keystone Health System
Four Delaware County hospitals are in this system — Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Delaware County Memorial, Springfield, and Taylor Hospitals. Crozer-Chester is about a mile from the School of Nursing. In addition to a clinical site where students care for patients as part of course requirements, faculty collaborate with nursing staff and managers to develop experiences/projects that will benefit both the hospital’s staff and our faculty and students.
One benefit that has stemmed from these partnerships is that Widener students are often hired after their junior year to be trained as patient care technicians. This not only gives them the opportunity to reinforce what they have learned in the classroom, but also obtain a job in a related field.
