CBS Philly 3 reporter decorating cake for cake boss

Cake Boss Competition

Vittoria Woodill from CBS Philly covers the annual cake boss competition at Widener. Watch video.

In the Center for Hospitality Management, student-run events are one of the many ways students are exposed to the hospitality industry. Students learn first-hand the complexities of planning and managing an event. Many of the events are fundraisers for student organizations to assist in defraying the cost to attend professional conferences. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds raised are donated to one of our charitable community partners.

In essence, events allow students to interact and engage with the industry, teach the importance of civic engagement, and foster leadership growth and development.

Cake Boss

The 6th Annual Widener Cake Boss took place on March 30, 2017. This annual event is run by the student chapter of the National Association of Catering and Events (NACE) and The American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA). The event is modeled after the iconic TLC show Cake Boss. Participants submit a cake to be judged in one of three categories: 1) grandma’s favorite, 2) best appearance, and 3) most unique flavor. Guests have the opportunity to taste each cake and enjoy live music, fruit, a chocolate fountain, and basket auctions for the chance to win great prizes. Students in the hospitality management program plan, market, and execute this sensational event. See Flickr gallery for photos from Cake Boss.
