Graduate Certification Programs, Education
Certificates of Completion
The following four programs are $400 per credit. These post-baccalaureate certificate of completion programs allow students to gain graduate credit that can help them advance in their organization without fully committing to a multi-year masters or doctorate program.
Should a student wish to continue beyond these certificates of completion, all courses in the certificate programs matriculate into the corresponding masters and doctoral programs.
- 1. Teacher Leadership Certificate (15 credits)
This online teacher leadership certificate is offered for educational professionals who currently possess a bachelor’s and/or master's degrees in education or another related field. The 15-credit certificate program is designed for working professionals who want to develop their leadership capacity, but still intend to teach or stay in the classroom. Students develop insights into how they can work within educational organizations, foster collaborations, and positively influence the school community.
- 2. Special Education - Assistive Technology Certificate (12-15 credits)
This non-licensure certificate program is designed for individuals interested in working with children and adults who have special needs and would benefit from the use of assistive technologies.

- 3. Higher Education Leadership and Practice Certificate (15 credits)
This hybrid/online graduate certificate in higher education leadership and practice enables individuals to acquire new knowledge and develop skills grounded in theory, scholarship, educational research and best practices. Students learn how the field of higher education is organized and studied, best practices in institutional effectiveness, and how to integrate data and theories into decision-making practices.

K–12 Literacy Coach
In addition to the graduate certifications, The Center for Education at Widener also offers certified reading specialists a letter of endorsement as a K–12 literacy coach. [Note that this is not a certified certificate by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).]
Literacy coaching, a peer coaching framework in K–12 classrooms, is an area in which both schools and individual teachers request training. The International Reading Association’s (IRA) monograph, “The Role and Qualifications of the Reading Coach” (2004) addresses the need for quality training for this important professional development role. Widener’s graduate training for literacy coaching addresses both IRA’s standards and the PDE’s Instructional Coach Endorsement Competencies.
A sequence of four graduate courses is required for the letter of endorsement: two supervision/leadership courses in education and two literacy coaching courses. It is possible for candidates to meet this requirement within one year. Supervision/leadership courses from prior graduate work in education may apply toward the coaching endorsement.
Apply now to a certification program or the literacy coaching letter of endorsement.
