Graduate Certification Programs, Education

The following four programs are $400 per credit. These post-baccalaureate certificate of completion programs allow students to gain graduate credit that visitcan help them advance in their organization without fully committing to a multi-year masters or doctoral program.


Should a student wish to continue beyond these certificates of completion, all courses in the certificate programs matriculate into the corresponding masters and doctoral programs.


  • 1. Teacher Leadership Certificate (15 credits)

This online teacher leadership certificate is offered for educational professionals who currently possess a bachelor’s and/or master's degrees in education or another related field. The 15-credit certificate program is designed for working professionals who want to develop their leadership capacity, but still intend to teach or stay in the classroom. Students develop insights into how they can work within educational organizations, foster collaborations, and positively influence the school community.

The courses in this program matriculate into the K-12 educational leadership master or doctoral programs.

  • 2. Special Education - Assistive Technology Certificate (12-15 credits)

This non-licensure certificate program is designed for individuals interested in working with children and adults who have special needs and would benefit from the use of assistive technologies.

The courses in this program matriculate into the special education masters program.

  • 3. Higher Education Leadership and Practice Certificate (15 credits)

This hybrid/online graduate certificate in higher education leadership enables individuals to acquire new knowledge and develop skills grounded in theory, scholarship, educational research and best practices. Students learn how the field of higher education is organized and studied, best practices in institutional effectiveness, and how to integrate data and theories into decision-making practices.

The courses in this program matriculate into the higher education leadership master or doctoral programs.

  • 4. Reading Specialist Certificate (27 credits)

The reading specialist certificate is designed to further prepare practicing teachers to enhance literacy education. Courses focus on such topics as comprehension development, word analysis, vocabulary development, assessment, and corrective instruction of reading difficulties.

The courses in this program matriculate into the reading education masters program. Upon completion of this certificate program, graduates are eligible for Pennsylvania Department of Education certification.

Pennsylvania Department of Education Certifications

Upon completion of the following certificate programs, graduates are eligible for Pennsylvania Department of Education certification. These programs are $475 per credit. Most courses matriculate into the corresponding masters and/or doctoral programs.

Pre-K–12 Instructional Coaching Endorsements

The Center for Education also offers certified reading specialists a Pre-K-12 Instructional Coach endorsement certificate through a peer coaching framework in Pre-K–12 classrooms, with the option for students to become an Instructional Coach or choose to specialize in Literacy (Instructional Coaching-Literacy Emphasis Endorsement).

The Instructional Coaching Endorsement is available for reading specialists who desire to further strengthen their professional knowledge and skills in instructional coaching. Widener University’s Instructional Coaching Program will be based on current Pennsylvania Standards Aligned Curriculum and address the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Instructional Coach Endorsement Competencies as well asThe International Literacy Association’s (ILA) Standards for Reading Professionals—Revised 2010.

The 12-credit Instructional Coaching Endorsement Program will consist of a sequence of four graduate courses with a minimum of 45 hours of field experiences. It will be possible for candidates to meet this requirement within one year.
