Student Testimonial

Denise Monzione, 2014

Widener provided me with hands-on experience and interactions with knowledgeable faculty to guide me along in pursuing my master in education and certification as a home and school visitor. I am now employed at Bonner & Prendie High School.

You’ve been working in another industry and have decided you have a passion to teach! Not to worry. Widener University can help you earn a teaching certificate and can advise you on the best program option to meet your needs–either through a certification program or one of our graduate education programs

Already certified? Widener can offer you the opportunity to complete an add-on certification that will increase your ability to be promoted, move into another position, or just increase your knowledge base in your current certification area.

Why Widener?

For those with a bachelor’s degree in an approved program of study, Widener University offers the unique ability to earn a teaching certificate in as little as two or three semesters. Depending on the individual’s background, students may need as few as seven courses, in addition to a semester of supervised student teaching. Widener will work with each individual to create a program with the quality of coursework you require, but in a timeframe that will allow you to meet your goal quickly.

Certification Options

The Center for Education offers the following programs for professional certification.

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth and Space Science
  • Elementary Education: The Early Years, PreK–4
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Social Studies
  • Spanish

Certain certificates have additional requirements for entry into and completion of the certification program. Students should consult the graduate catalog or make an appointment with an advisor.

Alternate Route Certification

The Teacher Intern program is an alternate route to certification for those seeking a career change. In this program, students secure a full-time, paid teaching position and are supervised by a university faculty over a minimum one-year period. In addition, required coursework is offered in the evenings at Widener’s Main campus and/or online. Upon completion of the coursework and the supervised teaching experience, the candidate will be eligible for the Pennsylvania Instructional I certificate.

The program usually takes approximately 3 years to complete, but is ideal for the individual who is unable to participate in a full-time program.

Complete the application for admission to the graduate program, certification only and then contact the Center for Education.
