Doctoral candidates at the Center for Education take a deeper look into the theory of teaching and administration to understand its importance in problem solving from the classroom or the boardroom. Through research, educators are taught to anticipate future societal trends and needs, and then develop plans of action to meet those needs.
The goals of the doctor of education programs at Widener University are rooted in the mission and goals of the university itself. To that end, the doctoral programs are committed to:
- Fostering an understanding of theory and its relevance to problem solving, and the expansion of our knowledge base
- Contributing to the improvement of leadership by encouraging the spirit of critical inquiry and analysis through problem solving
- Anticipating future societal trends and needs, and the ability to develop plans of
action to meet those needs
- Cognitive Studies in Reading
The doctor of education in reading offers professionals an opportunity to either add a new specialty area to their teaching background or gain a deeper understanding of an existing focus on reading.
- Higher Education Leadership
At Widener, higher education doctoral candidates develop leadership skills grounded in scholarship, educational research, and best practices.
- K–12 Educational Leadership
Graduate students can focus their course of study on one of three concentrations: school system leadership, instructional technology leadership, and pupil personnel services.
The Center for Education at Widener is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), www.ncate.org. This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs and advanced educator preparation programs at Widener’s Main Campus and online programs. However, the accreditation does not include individual education courses that the institution offers to P–12 educators for professional development, relicensure, or other purposes.
