Program Highlight: Study Abroad in Higher Education

Widener’s graduate programs in higher education offer a study abroad experience exclusively for higher education students. Choosing a destination for the inaugural trip was easy for Dr. Meghan Pifer, who selected London, Englandthe United Kingdom – home of the second-oldest surviving university, the University of Oxford, and the third-oldest, the University of Cambridge.

The 12 Widener students who attended toured both Oxford and Cambridge universities in addition to the University of London. They attended lectures by Pifer, who added social and political context to what the group had learned about the British higher education system, and also interviewed local residents about their experiences in postsecondary education.

Pifer will plan subsequent trips abroad for higher education students and work with other faculty members.

“I need to know how U.S. students will be treated if they go abroad. It’s also helpful to know what international students expect when they come here. Those of us in higher education no longer operate within the confines of our campuses. With branch campuses, international partnerships, virtual campuses and much more, we connect with people all over the world," says Pifer.
