Special Education (MEd)

Program Options

  • MEd Special Education (PreK–8) with Pennsylvania Certification

    Learn how to utilize evidence-based practices for working with children and youth who have special education needs. Program completers learn principles of effective assessment, specialized instruction, and individualized programming. Student will be qualified to apply for PA teacher licensure in special education grades preschool through 8th grade.

  • MEd Special Education: Assistive Technology

    Earn a master’s degree in special education and/or add courses toward a certificate in assistive technology. Learn how to help teachers integrate the latest technological tools into special education classrooms or help develop new strategies that can be implemented district-wide.

Personalized Learning

At Widener, students have the advantage of a customized approach to earning their degree. The program allows students to tailor graduate coursework to their desired career goals. In fact, students often learn by doing. In a course taught by Dr. Mary Gozza-Cohen, students built an informational website designed to inform and educate on the topic of assistive technology.

Comprehensive Curriculum

Teacher candidates learn to assess, analyze assessment results, and select and monitor interventions for diversely abled children. Student are also taught to become sensitive to the environment in which they work so they can respond effectively to the needs of individual students, families, and teachers, but can also be a positive change agent for the special education field in general.

Accreditation

ncateThe Center for Education at Widener is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), www.ncate.org. This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs and advanced educator preparation programs at Widener’s Main Campus and online programs. However, the accreditation does not include individual education courses that the institution offers to P–12 educators for professional development, relicensure, or other purposes.
