University College offers several opportunities for students to complete their degree sooner by demonstrating knowledge in a specific subject area.
Start with Credits
Students may receive credit:
- For courses taken at another institution of higher education.
- For articulations University College has with other institutions of learning.
- By demonstrating prior learning in a non-college setting.
- By completing a special examination.
Do you need to finish your degree? Widener University and University College has worked to develop articulations with a variety of regionally accredited higher education institutions and hospital based allied health programs to ease transfer for students. There are three test options that students may pursue to gain credit by examination:
l. Comprehensive Challenge Exams
These are exams developed by faculty in specific subject areas. You may first view the syllabus of the course to determine if you have the knowledge, prior to scheduling and then taking the seated test. A complete list of Challenge Exams is maintained by the Chester Campus office.
2. College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)Widener University’s Exton Campus now offers the College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) for students. CLEP exams provide students with the opportunity to earn college credits by achieving qualifying scores on tests. There are a total of 34 different CLEP exams available. Each exam is worth between three and 12 credits, depending on the student’s score, as well as the level of difficulty for the subject area.
CLEP exam subject areas include Composition and Literature, Foreign Languages, History and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Science, and Business. A list of all 34 subject areas, as well as information on purchasing CLEP study guides, is available at the official CLEP web site: www.collegeboard.com/clep. CLEP exams can be scheduled at Widener University's Exton Campus Monday through Thursday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The cost for each CLEP exam is $97. DANTES cover certain subjects that can be equated to some University College courses. DANTES is designed solely to assist service members in completing their collegiate education. If you have taken a DANTES test, it will be evaluated upon admission to University College.
3. Dantes Subject Standardized Tests (DSSTs)
Credit for prior learning provides students several ways to gain credit for experiences inside and outside the classroom:
Advanced placement tests, with scores at a certain level, can yield course credits.
Advanced Standing (bloc credit) applies to students who have completed some approved programs, such as an associate’s degree in applied science or an approved healthcare program.
Portfolio Assessment allows students to receive credit by developing a portfolio that documents mastery of the learning outcomes of a specific course in a non-traditional setting.
Credit for Educational Experiences
Credit for Educational Experiences in Noncollegiate Organizations or in the armed forces allows credit hour evaluations and recommendations based on training programs reviewed and qualified by the American Council on Education (ACE) and administered by professional associations, private industry, government agencies and the armed services.
