Connect @ Widener
Staff, students, and community members all work hard to make Widener a warm and welcoming place for all students. Take advantage of the numerous opportunities listed below to get the most out of your experience as an international student at Widener University!
ISS is pleased to offer 30+ programs every semester! These programs range from fun trips to Philadelphia, New York, Longwood Gardens, and horseback riding farms to on-campus activities like festivals and intercultural communication workshops. ISS also partners with International Club to highlight culture on campus. In the past we have celebrated food day with Bread around the World, shared international autumn traditions, and made dumplings for Chinese/Lunar New Year. Global Pride Partners
First year international students are strongly encouraged to sign up for Global Pride Partners, a mentor program that connects international students with current Widener students. This academic year program requires partners to attend at least one ISS event a semester and monthly workshops conducted by their peers. Each partner will work together to create a workshop on academic skills, cultural pieces, or areas of interest. This program is a continuation of the Virtual Pride Partners program that is offered in the summer prior to arrival.
International Friendship Corner
Practice English with local community members! Once a week a group of community members join Widener students in the multicultural lounge to have conversations. English Corner also hosts two yearly picnics, a community Thanksgiving Dinner, and holiday themed parties.
A staggering amount of students never enter an American home while they are in the US. The Friendship families program was created to give international students an opportunity to learn more about American culture by interacting more closely with a local family. Likewise, the program also offers American families a chance to learn more about other cultures. Friendship Families are expected to meet at least once a month. Complete the Friendship Families application in CampusCruiser.
International Education Week
Every year for a week in November, ISS and Widener University celebrate International Education Week! Activities include restaurant trips, dancing lessons, movie screenings, guest speakers, and are concluded with a large multicultural fair in the University Center.
Every year multiple cultural immersions are offered to take small groups of students to learn about different cultures. Week long trips in the past have included learning about immigration in Miami, human/civil rights in Atlanta, and the Gullah/Geechee Nation in Georgia and South Carolina. The longer trips normally occur over Spring Break or the week before graduation. Shorter cultural immersions/day trips are also offered throughout the semester and are normally free or offered at very little cost. Day trips in the past have included Philadelphia, New York, Washington D.C., and Lancaster, PA.
International Club is one of the best ways to get involved on campus. IC offers volunteer opportunities and monthly meetings to learn about other cultures and helps sponsor fun cultural events on campus. This year they will be bringing a Japanese drum circle to campus, co-sponsoring two receptions, and raising awareness about food access. Request to join International Club through CampusCruiser.
Saudi Club is a fun group of Saudi students that holds events for Ramadan and other cultural celebrations. They often have great food and tea and bring color to any event. Request to join Saudi Club through CampusCruiser.
