Choosing a Major/Choosing a Career

Did you know that Jerry Greenfield of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream was a pre-med major? Or that Charles Kuralt was a history major? Statistically speaking, most individuals will change careers five to seven times during their working life. Is it any wonder that choosing a career is a confusing issue for college students?

CAPS provides the following services to help students:

  • Individual career counseling
  • An up-to-date Career Information Center
  • "What Can I Do With A Major In..." series
  • Career inventories
  • FOCUS - an on-line career guidance system
  • Alumni Mentor Program
  • Gaining Experience

How do students find such opportunities through CAPS?

Having work experience prior to graduation is no longer a luxury, it's a necessity. Career-related work experience ranks among the top three criteria employers value when hiring college graduates.

  • Online job listings
  • Career links from the CAPS homepage
  • Internship directories
  • Internship Interviews
  • Contacts with employers attending annual career days
  • Researching Graduate Schools

CAPS offers a number of resources students may find helpful

Students considering graduate or professional schools are encouraged to start exploring options as early as their junior year.  Some resources are:

  • Guides to academic programs
  • Test registration materials
  • Financial aid information
  • "Going to Graduate School," an informational program
  • Assistance with applications/personal statements
  • Connecting Students with Employers

CAPS plays a key role in linking students with employers

CAPS helps to offer positions matching graduates' skills and career goals. CAPS accomplishes this through:

  • Career fairs
  • On-campus recruiting
  • Resume Referral
  • Online access to jobs and employers
  • Regular contact with over 300 employers
