Creative writing

The Creative Writing Major at Widener provides students with the opportunity to participate in a writing community that helps them grow as writers and as human beings. Graduates will find themselves well prepared for all kinds of jobs that require excellent oral and written communication skills, sound critical thinking, and a vibrant imagination.

Creative Writing classes are interesting and lively because there is so much opportunity for student participation. In every course, students provide feedback for and receive feedback from peers and conference with professors at every stage of the writing process. With dedicated, supportive, highly qualified faculty and courses capped at fifteen, students receive the kind of individual attention they would not receive at most other universities.

Creative Writing majors at Widener participate in open mics held on campus throughout the year. They gain valuable experience in publishing by helping edit the Pioneer Review, Widener’s literary journal.  They sharpen writing skills by working on The Dome, the university’s newspaper.  In addition, they have the opportunity to interact with nationally known, award-winning fiction writers and poets through our Distinguished Writers Series.
