English

When you choose to major in English, you’re doing more than choosing a degree program.  You’re choosing a path of study that will open new intellectual horizons.  You’re giving yourself the opportunity to consider the literature and culture of the past, present, and future.  You’re exploring the wide range of emotions, experiences, values, and beliefs – all the things that make us human.

The English major provides a unique chance to learn about the world and oneself from multiple perspectives.  The study of English language and literature engages the critical and creative mind.  Through reading, writing, research – and lively discussions – we become better readers, writers…thinkers.

Widener University English majors take these qualities with them when they begin their careers, too.  Employers recognize the necessity of strong reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, and for any career you might be thinking of, there is no better way to start down that path than with a degree in English.

In addition to an accessible and supportive faculty, the English program offers students many opportunities and activities.

  • Widener University sponsors the publications of the College English Association, which gives students the chance to gain valuable experience working on a scholarly journal.
  • Students can also participate in the English Club, present their work at regional and national conferences, and be invited to join Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society.
  • The Creative Writing program sponsors The Pioneer Review, the Distinguished Speakers Series, and several open mics throughout the year.
  • Majors can also minor in Professional and Technical Writing or focus in Journalism – and join The Dome, Widener’s student newspaper.

Both in the classroom and out, the English program at Widener is committed to active learning and student achievement.
