The Department of Modern Languages at Widener University offers a varied program of language, literary, and cultural studies in French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. The Department has several options for students who wish to study languages beyond the basic levels, including majors in French and Spanish, minors in French, German, Italian, and Spanish, and teaching certificates in French, Spanish, and Bilingual Education.
Our faculty are as diverse as our programs, and all professors have spent time living, studying, and teaching abroad. We offer our students the best possible education in language, literary, and cultural studies. Students gain not only language proficiency but also research experience, presentation skills, and critical thinking abilities. All of these capacities prepare students well for a variety of career paths.
The Department offers a number of options for students to explore language and culture beyond the classroom. Conversation lunch tables are organized each semester in the University Center to allow students to practice their language skills in a more relaxed setting. In addition, faculty regularly lead field trips to area museums, concerts, lectures, restaurants, and films.
Students are strongly encouraged to explore the wide variety of options available for study, work, service, and travel abroad. Widener sponsors faculty-led trips and study abroad programs, such as the Widener in Mexico program that takes students to Cuernavaca, Mexico, during the summer. In addition, cooperative arrangements allow Widener students to participate in summer, semester, or year-long programs offered by other colleges, universities, and non-profit groups.
