Widener aspires to be the nation's preeminent metropolitan university, and as such, it is committed to contributing to the vitality and well being of the communities it serves through experiential learning, service learning, educational initiatives, economic development, and community building.

Widener places a high value on citizenship and civic engagement, so the university believes it only fitting to assist the children of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The Widener CARES scholarship program provides the opportunity for a quality four-year education to children of military personnel who were killed in action in either Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Over the past several years, Widener has gained national recognition for its civic initiatives.
