Medical Insurance
Widener University requires that all full-time students carry a major medical insurance policy. International students have a specific required policy specific to their needs and concerns. Please read the details below and follow all instructions prior to the stated deadline dates.
Costs
The total premium for school year 2007-2008 is $1,260, which is divided into two premium periods:
- September 1 through January 31
- and February 1 through August 31
The premium charges are added to the fall and spring semesters' bills, respectively. The fall premium is $525, and the spring/summer premium is $735.
The insurance coverage is good in every country in the world except the student's home country of residence. Optional dependent coverage is also available; it must be applied for at ISS simultaneous to the primary student's enrollment in the plan.
Deductibles
Students are required to pay a deductible (also known as a co-pay) to the hospital or doctor's office before receiving treatment. The following list details the different deductibles for particular situations:
- $50 deductible per injury or illness
- 100% coverage of treatments and/or hospitalization after the initial deductible
- $250 deductible for hospital Emergency Room service
- 50% of all prescriptions filled at pharmacies
- Students must pay the full prescription cost upfront and be reimbursed their half by filing a claim with the insurance company
Insurance Policy
The following information details the full International Student Insurance policy for the 2006-2007 academic year:
- $250,000 maximum per covered injury or illness
- $10,000 Accidental Death or Dismemberment Benefit included
- No co-insurance
- Valid anywhere in the world except the student's home country of residence
- Medical evacuation and repatriation costs are covered to full policy limits
Claims
All bills with claim forms must be submitted to the claims department within 90 days of the onset of the illness or injury. Students risk payment being denied by the insurance company if this procedure is not followed.
To file an insurance claim, please contact Lois Fuller at (610) 499-4498 or at ljfuller@widener.edu.
Termination of Attendance
Students who terminate attendance at the University during a premium year must secure written verification of graduation, transfer, or withdrawal from ISS. All verification and refund requests will be submitted to the insurance company by ISS. The insurance company requires a minimum of 30 days to process the refund.
Please note: Students failing to notify International Student Services of any termination by its effective date will not be eligible for a refund.
