Institute for Physical therapy education

Widener offers both a three-year full-time program leading to the clinical Doctor of Physical Therapy degree (DPT) and a part-time transitional DPT program for physical therapists who are currently licensed to practice. The DPT is the preferred degree in physical therapy education, according to the American Physical Therapy Association.

Widener was one of the first 10 programs in the country to offer this degree. Now, over half of all programs offer the DPT. Widener's program is in keeping with Vision 2020 of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Competency, Character & Citizenship

The mission of the Institute for Physical Therapy Education is to graduate clinically competent physical therapists that demonstrate exemplary character and assume the responsibilities of citizenship. Clinically competent graduates manifest the authentic knowledge and skills of the physical therapy profession by engaging in evidence-based practice, life-long learning, and autonomous decision-making.

The character traits of graduates enable them to internalize values that support ethical behavior, compassion, and respect for cultural traditions. Graduates, as responsible citizens, collaborate to: enhance healthcare delivery, empower clients and families, and contribute to the profession, the community, and society.
