Candidates for graduation must wear proper academic regalia to participate in the commencement ceremony. The university provides standard regalia to degree candidates. All candidates who get the standard regalia may keep it after graduation.
Candidates will be measured for and can pick up their caps and gowns in the Bookstore in University Center during the following hours:
- Monday through Thursday, May 9 - 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Friday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Monday through Thursday, May 16 - 19, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Friday, May 20, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
It is highly recommended that you pick up your cap and gown as early as possible. For those graduates who live or will be outside the area and cannot come to campus prior to commencement day, please call 610-499-4187 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org no later than 7:00 p.m., Monday, May 16, and reserve a cap and gown for pick-up on the morning of your ceremony. When you call or e-mail, leave your name, your degree, and a contact phone number, and you will receive a confirmation. With the confirmation, you will be able to pick up your cap and gown on the morning of your commencement ceremony, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. You must have a confirmation to pick up your regalia on the morning of the ceremony.
Candidates who are getting standard regalia do not need to be measured in advance. Candidates must pick up their own regalia in person and cannot have someone else do it for them. Candidates will need to present their Campus1Card when picking up regalia. All regalia must be picked up in the Bookstore. We cannot deliver or ship regalia to candidates.
Sample gowns are available to try on in the Bookstore from May 9 to May 119.
Properly fitting graduation gowns should fall to mid-calf and should be able to completely
zip. Do not cut the sleeves of the gowns; they are supposed to be worn as they are
(see pictures). Mortarboards are one size fits all.
If you have any questions regarding regalia, please e-mail email@example.com.
Bachelor's and Associate's Degree Candidates
Bachelor's and associate's degree candidates wear a black gown and mortarboard with a tassel. They do not wear hoods as part of their regalia. There is no additional charge for regalia.
Master's Degree Candidates
There is no additional charge for the standard commencement regalia, which includes black gown and mortarboard with tassel. Master's degree candidates who wish to purchase a custom made cap and gown should contact the Widener regalia representative from Oak Hall Industries at 610-692-4056 by April 8.
Doctoral Degree Candidates
Academic regalia for doctoral candidates includes a gown, mortarboard/tam, and hood. There is no additional charge for the standard gown and mortarboard with tassel. Doctoral candidates who wish to purchase a custom-made tam and gown should place their order with the Bookstore.
Doctoral candidates pay a fee for their hood and receive it as part of the commencement ceremony. They keep the hood after graduation.
Inclement Weather Tickets
Inclement weather tickets are distributed with the caps and gowns for the undergraduate commencement ceremony. Each candidate will receive three inclement weather tickets. Because the graduate student commencement ceremony is smaller in number, tickets are not needed for Schwartz.
