Eric Behrens has been named chief information officer at Widener University.

Widener University President Julie E. Wollman has appointed Eric Behrens as chief information officer. He will be a key member of the university’s executive team as he oversees all university information and data management systems.

Behrens comes to Widener from Swarthmore College where he most recently served as associate chief information technology officer. He began his new position at Widener this week.

He will work closely with President Wollman to design and implement a comprehensive and forward-looking strategy for leveraging information, data, and technology in support of the university’s mission and achievement of its vision. He will oversee a staff of 35 diverse and talented professionals who provide services on the university’s main campus in Chester, Pa., its Commonwealth Law School in Harrisburg, Pa., and its Delaware Law School in Wilmington, Del.

“I am excited to welcome Eric Behrens to Widener University,” President Wollman said. “His collaborative and thoughtful leadership style, his deep knowledge of academic and systems technology, and his extensive higher education experience make him a great fit for this position. I am confident he will help us enhance student learning and achieve innovation that will contribute to making Widener a first-choice for education and employment.”

Behrens has a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University and a bachelor’s degree in theater studies from Swarthmore College. He is on the faculty of the EDUCAUSE Institute New IT Managers Program and formerly served on the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative advisory board.

“I am delighted to assume this role at Widener University,” Behrens said. “I look forward to engaging with students, staff and faculty and overseeing a department that strives to find creative, effective ways to serve their technology needs.”

Behrens lives in Wallingford, Pa. with his wife Lisa Popeck and their three children. His head shot is available here.
