Widener University Receives National Award for Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion
Widener University is among a select group of institutions nationwide to receive an INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine 2016 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, which recognizes U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. Widener is one of only 83 institutions in the United States to receive the award this year, and the only one in the Philadelphia region.
“As a leading metropolitan university, Widener has made a concerted effort to create a campus community that is dedicated to diversity and inclusion, and I’m very pleased that we are being recognized with the HEED Award,” said Widener President Julie E. Wollman.
INSIGHT Into Diversity selected Widener for the award based on the university’s emphasis on diversity in its strategic plan, its efforts to recruit and retain minority students, the work of the campus-wide diversity and inclusion committee, its use of a Campus Climate Survey for students, faculty and staff to strengthen diversity and inclusion on campus, and several other programs and initiatives.
The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees, continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion, according to Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
“We take a holistic approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient,” Pearlstein said. “Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being accomplished every day across their campus.”
As a recipient of the annual HEED Award, Widener will be featured in the November 2016 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
