School of Business Administration Offers Joint Certificate with SAS Global Academic Program

Widener University’s School of Business Administration now offers a joint certificate program with the SAS Global Academic Program in Business Intelligence and Analytics. This is the first joint certificate program of its kind offered at the undergraduate level in the greater Philadelphia region.

The SAS Global Academic Program created the SAS Joint Certificate Program to better assist universities in preparing students to work in a data-rich business environment. The joint certificate documents students’ coursework using SAS’ award-winning software to solve real-world business problems.

“This certificate provides additional assurance for employers that Widener students are graduating with extensive training on SAS software and have a variety of technical skills that allow them to handle big data, make sense of that data and communicate findings in writing and verbally,” said Dr. Richard Goeke, associate professor.

To complete the SAS Joint Certificate in Business Intelligence and Analytics, Widener students must complete four courses currently part of the School of Business Administration curriculum: intermediate statistical analysis, management information systems, database management systems and business analytics. Business informatics majors already take all four of these courses and will automatically receive a certificate upon graduation in May 2017. All business majors take two of the courses and can take the other two as electives to earn their certificate.

“It is rare for institutions to offer this certificate program at the undergraduate level as SAS often requires time –and patience – to fully grasp all of its technicalities,” said School of Business Administration Dean Jayati Ghosh. “However, we saw value in offering this training to our students as SAS is the leading business analytics software. It’s in use by a majority of Fortune 500 companies, and Money Magazine recently highlighted SAS skills at the top of its ‘most valuable career skills’ list.”

Widener’s School of Business Administration is also currently exploring opportunities to offer SAS training to area businesses. For more information, contact Goeke at
