Widener Law Commonwealth Alum Announced as White House Counsel

Widener Law Commonwealth alumnus Donald F. McGahn II was announced by president-elect Donald Trump as the White House Counsel. McGahn is a 1994 graduate of Widener Law Commonwealth.

McGahn, who is a partner with Jones Day in Washington D.C., specializes in representing elected officials, candidates, national state parties, and political consultants. He also previously served as a commissioner and chairman of the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Mr. McGahn, and we are proud of our alumnus who is making an impact on a national level,” said Dean Christian Johnson. “We wish him great success in his new role.”

McGahn is one of several Widener Law Commonwealth alumni who have gone on to have success on the national level. Dean Johnson said the school is poised to continue producing quality professionals for key government positions, as it is home to the Law & Government Institute. The institute focuses on teaching students how government works and the roles that lawyers play in making and implementing law. Law students working towards a Law and Government Institute certificate have the opportunity to connect with government leaders and lawmakers on both a state and national level.

“Students who earn the certificate from the Law and Government Institute come away with a comprehensive understanding of government policies, procedures and the way laws are written,” said Dean Johnson. “This knowledge gives them a strategic advantage throughout their legal careers.”
