Widener University Announces Winners of the Seventh Annual High School Leadership Awards

Winners announced

Widener University will honor High School Leadership Award recipients next month at the National Constitution Center.

Widener University, one of the nation’s premier universities for civic engagement and applied leadership, in partnership with WCAU-TV NBC10, today announced the winners of the Widener University High School Leadership Awards.

In its seventh year, the program recognized 175 students from high schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware who demonstrated courage and leadership within their communities.

Students were selected for their abilities to stand up for what is right, address a wrong and make a difference in their communities or schools. Among the winners, the Widener University High School Leadership Awards recognized students who:

  • Started initiatives to advocate for women’s rights, racial equality, educational reform, and ending domestic violence
  • Created apps to feed the hungry, built playgrounds for children with special needs, and collected supplies for local veterans
  • Volunteered as educational tutors, mentors, and coaches in local communities

“Widener University, in partnership with NBC10, is proud to present the seventh annual High School Leadership Awards to high school students in our region who demonstrate strong leadership and exemplary character,” said Widener University President Julie E. Wollman. “Widener is committed to developing leaders with character who become engaged citizens, which is why we feel it is important to recognize high school students who exemplify our core principles in their everyday lives.  I look forward to personally congratulating each recipient as we celebrate their achievements at our upcoming awards ceremony.”

Winners are invited to a celebratory program at the National Constitution Center on March 13, 2018, as well as a leadership conference presented by the Oskin Leadership Institute at Widener University in the fall of 2018. Most notably, winners will receive a scholarship of $20,000 over four years should they enroll at Widener University for undergraduate studies.

“NBC10 is proud to partner with Widener University to recognize this group of incredible high school students who have demonstrated integrity, leadership and character for the betterment of their communities,” said Ric Harris, president and general manager of NBC10 and Telemundo62. “The High School Leadership Award recipients are champions in their own communities and represent the future leaders of our society.”
