As the director of accounting, Joe Wicklund’s job requires much more than balancing debits and credits.

In his role, Wicklund is the lead reviewer for all accounts. He manages timelines and deliverables, stays up to date on financial reporting and provides the department with institutional knowledge on the accounts the university manages. He also handles reconciliations for endowments and endowed donor funds.

“We work hard to record and present the data in a useful and meaningful way that facilitates informed decision-making based on our reporting,” he said.

One aspect of his job is keeping on top of all compliance issues and ensuring that all accounting regulations are met.

While many departments on campus get busier with the start of the academic year, the accounting department’s busy season coincides with the end of the fiscal year. Wicklund and his staff handle closing all financials in July and then work with several external auditors in August.

“We focus a lot of our efforts to prepare for year-end,” Wicklund said. “I couldn’t do it without my excellent team. I appreciate being surrounded by people who want to learn and who are happy to be supporting the university’s mission.”

Once the year-end reporting is finalized, the department quickly moves on to handle monthly and quarterly closes.

“There is always something new at Widener, which keeps our department consistently busy,” he said. “Just this year, we had the opening of Harris Hall and the Uno Grill, the acquisition of the Taylor Arboretum and the purchase of the CARES21 property down in Costa Rica.”

Before joining the Widener staff, Wicklund worked in public accounting as a senior auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he worked with many higher education clients. When it came time for a transition, Wicklund knew he could see himself being happy in an environment that supported continuous learning. He joined the Widener staff as a senior accountant in 2009.

Outside of work, Wicklund truly embraces the idea of continuous learning. He recently completed his MBA through the School of Business Administration at Widener, and he is beginning to study for the certified public accountant exam. When he is not focused on studying or work, Wicklund’s main priority is his family-his wife, Megan, and his children, Cole, 4, and Claire, 2.
