Jennifer Kitchen, Associate Director of Public Relations

The Office of Public Relations is always on the mission to raise the profile of the university. Jennifer Kitchen, associate director of public relations, is one of the busy faces that work to do so by promoting Widener through writing and documenting events on campus.

In her ninth year at Widener, Kitchen’s passion for public relations and telling the “Widener story” continues to grow.

As associate director of public relations, Kitchen has a number of responsibilities. She starts each morning reading the news and writing the Daily News Briefing, which is sent to Widener staff each day. Kitchen also writes and edits What’s Up @ Widener, a campus newsletter – the same one you are reading now! She is known as the “face” behind “Faces of Widener,” and has written just about every “Faces” article since joining the staff in 2008.

Kitchen handles all public relations needs for various schools and departments on campus, helps maintain website copy, produces social media content, and writes for the Widener magazine.

Kitchen has also worked as an adjunct professor in the communication studies department and is the professional advisor to the Widener chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). She belongs to several committees on campus, including the commencement committee and political engagement committee.

Prior to working at Widener, Kitchen worked for a public relations agency in Philadelphia, but eventually felt the need to do something more meaningful, which led her to Widener. “I really believe in the mission and vision of Widener so it makes it easy for me to do my job,” she said. “These stories have an impact whether it’s about the research our faculty are doing or community projects the students are working on – these stories need to be told.”

Kitchen enjoys meeting so many people through her job, and being able to sit down and interview them has allowed her to cultivate many relationships during her time at Widener.

A proud alumna of Widener, Kitchen’s favorite memory was her time spent as a student and employee, while receiving her MBA from Widener in 2011. Her experience allowed her to make new connections, and she’s found great value in her degree.

Off campus, Kitchen is very involved in the Public Relations Society of America’s Philadelphia chapter. She has held a board positon since 2008, and was named president of the chapter in 2015.

Many may see Kitchen outside of the office and running around campus, literally. Kitchen has a passion for long-distance running, a hobby she has enjoyed for nearly a decade. She is currently training for her eighth marathon – her dream – the Boston Marathon, the marathon of marathons, which she will run next Monday, April 17. Her long-term goal is to run all the major world marathons, two of which she has already completed – Chicago and Berlin.

A little less than 6 months ago, Kitchen and her husband Michael welcomed a new addition to their family, their first child, Miles. “I think having a child is a miracle,” she said. “I didn’t believe in love at first sight until having my son. I can’t imagine life without him now.”

Kitchen says as a mom she has a whole new perspective on life, and will never take it for granted. She and her family live in Media, Pa. and love to travel. Their favorite place to visit is Europe, since they met studying abroad while undergrads in Italy.
