      Widener ROTC Commissions 14 Cadets

      Samantha DeCapua, ’17 performed the sheathing of the saber.

      Widener University’s Dauntless Battalion commissioned 14 cadets as second lieutenants of the U.S. Army on Sunday, May 14. Cadets from Villanova University, West Cheser University of Pennsylvania and Widener University participated in a joint commissioning ceremony in front of Widener's Old Main building by the university's Veteran's Memorial.

      Lt. Col. Justin Shaffer, battalion commander and professor of military science, presided over the commissioning ceremony.

      Brigadier General John R. Evans, Jr., United States Army Special Operations Aviation Command, was the keynote speaker. Evans previously served as the Deputy Commanding General – Support for 2nd Infantry Division / Republic of Korea - US Combined Division in the Republic of Korea. His military awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Bronze Star with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Medal with V device and numeral 2, Combat Action Badge, Master Aviator Badge, Master Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge.

      Widener is the host institution for ROTC activity at the Abington and Brandywine campuses of Pennsylvania State University, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, Immaculata University, Neumann University, Villanova University and West Chester University of Pennsylvania. These partnerships help make Widener’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program one of the largest in the region, with 128 active cadets this academic year.

      The Widener cadets commissioned include: Samantha DeCapua of Barnegat, NJ; Anneliese Deussing of Collegeville, Pa.; Daniel Garman of Yardley, Pa. (Widener); Katelyn Reed of Roebling, NJ; Jordan Saufley of Wilmington, Del. (Widener); Sean Slusar of Carneys Point, NJ; and Tamiya Wilfong of Toms River, NJ.

      Samantha DeCapua performed the sheathing of the saber, an annual tradition carried out by the battalion’s top cadets.
