      Annual Staff Awards

University Recognizes Employees at Annual Staff Awards

      George Hassel

Associate Vice President for Risk and Compliance

Ronald Reagan was President, the first issue of the USA Today was published, the Weather Channel aired on television for the first time, and Michael Jackson released his second solo album – “Thriller.” The year was 1982 – the year Gloria Floyd, academic secretary for education, and George Hassel, associate vice president for risk and compliance, started their 35-year careers at Widener University.

While Floyd's main responsibilities are supporting faculty and administrative duties, she also works closely with students. No day is the same, but she loves working in the education environment.

      Gloria Floyd

      Academic Secretary for Education

Her fondest memory of Widener has been her long-lasting friendships with faculty and staff. “I still get together a couple times a year with the original group of secretaries that I started with. All have since retired,” she said. Widener is also like a family to Floyd, as her daughter attended Widener and her granddaughter attends Widener Partnership Charter School.

While he may never have had a finer day, anyone who has crossed paths with Hassel is sure to have a better day! The king of “other duties as assigned,” Hassel has held a number of different positions at Widener – including hotel manager. However, it is clear he excels working with the people of Widener and has been vital in leading the university’s efforts in risk and compliance. He truly enjoys spending time with his wife Nancy and his grandchildren in Ocean City, NJ.

On June 5, Floyd and Hassel were celebrated along with nearly 100 other Widener employees that were recognized for their years of service to the university. The other employees that were recognized include:
