Commonwealth Law Keeps Bar Exam Prep Interesting

Recent grads brush up on law facts at Pass the Bar Trivia.

Keeping recent law school graduates engaged and motivated for the biggest test before they start their career is a major focus after graduation for faculty at Widener Law Commonwealth.

This year, Professor Anna Hemingway put on her thinking cap to come up with hands-on learning activities that would help students retain and review the most important facts before taking the Bar Exam. Her idea – a fun round of Trivial Pursuit!

Pass the Bar Trivia, one of several review opportunities for recent grads, was spread over several weeks. Each week alums studying for the bar would work in teams to come up with the right answers for law-based trivia. At the end of the multi-week competition, one team emerges as the champion.

“Retention of the information is better for the students and this makes the review fun,” Hemingway said. “We run it like a traditional trivia night. We also have speed rounds of questions, which gets everybody excited.  They enjoy working in teams and talking about the answers before they lock one in. They really do learn from each other.”

The professors also came together to help students at the Pass the Bar Breakfast and Pass the Bar Pizza events held weekly throughout the summer. At each event, students were invited to sit down with professors to discuss specific topics, ask questions, and review law topics that appear on the multi-day bar exam.

Law school graduates are required to take the Bar Exam and receive a passing score before they are able to practice law in any state. The Pennsylvania Bar Exam is given each year in July and February.
